A Winter Wedding at The Bay Tree, Burford
This winter wedding moved naturally through the different spaces at The Bay Tree, from the morning preparations through to the ceremony and evening celebrations.
I photographed the day as it developed rather than working from a rigid shot list. The morning was about the people closest to the bride, the small reactions during preparations and the anticipation building before the ceremony.
Once everyone came together, the focus shifted to the ceremony itself, the exchange of rings and the moments between the couple and their guests.
Later in the day, the formality dropped away. There was time for the cake, first dance and evening celebrations before heading outside for a few photographs around Burford after dark.
Photographing Weddings at The Bay Tree
The Bay Tree works particularly well for documentary wedding photography because so much of the day can happen within and around the hotel.
Preparations, the ceremony and reception each have their own feel, but guests are never being moved huge distances simply to create photographs. That helps the wedding keep its natural rhythm.
The rooms also give plenty of opportunities to work with available light, reflections, windows and the interaction between people without constantly interrupting what is happening.
Burford itself adds another dimension. A short walk outside the hotel can give you a completely different set of photographs without disappearing from your guests for an hour-long portrait session.

I do not want couples spending their wedding day performing for the camera.
Most of my work is observational. I follow what is happening, anticipate moments and photograph people as they naturally interact with each other.
That does not mean I avoid giving direction when it helps. Family groups matter, and most couples want a few photographs together. I keep those parts relaxed and efficient so you can get back to your guests.
